The first UK solo exhibition of works by Boris Grebenshikov at MacDougall’s 21 October – 6 November 2015, London
21 October 2015 MacDougall’s is proud to open Three Theorems of Lilac – the first UK solo exhibition of works by Boris Grebenshikov, one of the most important contemporary Russian musician but also an accomplished painter.
The exhibition will take an informed look at his career, from his early works of the late 1970s through to major new pieces.
Boris Grebenshikov began painting in 1976, years before making his first professional record and throughout his practice has constantly explored new directions.
Grebenshikov's artworks are pieces of the puzzle from the mythological history of the World. While his early painting experiments are close to urban folklore his recent works are mainly landscapes.
Grebenshchikov tries to stretch the limits of a traditional visual depiction, showing «the inner qualities of landscape», in other words — «a totally unscientific position in the space».
Boris Grebenshikov’s works combines elements of surrealism, expressionism and naive painting, hardly fitting into a single defined genre. It is another world of Grebenshikov, which is parallel to his musical universe.
Three Theorems of Lilac exhibition held at MacDougall’s follows his first solo museum show at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2013–2014
Boris Grebenshikov will play a small acoustic concert to coincide with the exhibition at the private opening on 20 October.
