Greece is under concerted pressure from European Union interior ministers to do more to control the influx of refugees and migrants from Turkey, as the EU scrambles again to put together a coherent answer to the biggest challenge the union has ever faced.

Greece was the main gateway to Europe for millions refugees and migrants who reached the EU last year. It was unable to manage the to control the flow of arrivals, which has shown little sign of easing over the winter.

According to The Guardian, the countries bearing the brunt of the one million-plus arrivals in the past year rounded on Athens, with Austria warning that it could be kicked out, at least temporarily, of the Schengen area embracing 26 countries.

The European Union has taken a wide range of steps to give cash-strapped Athens financial assistance to deal with the crisis, but a lot of member states consider Athens is not using that enough.

"Hundreds of people have protested in north-east Greece against the security fence along the Turkish border, demanding the opening of safe routes for migrants just days after 45 people died making the risky Aegea", informs ABC News.

The flow of migrants has not stopped, as many of them, including women and children, arrived by dinghy on the Greek island of Lesbos from neighbouring Turkey on Monday, January 25.
