Russian media reports a prosecutor asked a Russian court on Wednesday to jail Ukrainian military pilot Nadezhda Savchenko for 23 years and tofineher of 100,000 rubles ($1,400), saying she was guilty of complicity in killing two Russian journalists reporting on the fighting in east Ukraine in summer 2014.

"The state prosecution believes it is possible to announce a final sentence of 23 years in jail to Savchenko," the prosecutor said. He also mentioned that Savchenko’s guilt in the murder of the reporters is "fully proven."

According to Reuters, the 34-year-old's plight and defiant stance in captivity have made her a national hero for many in Ukraine, where she is considered a political prisoner. The West, as well as rights groups, have repeatedly called on Moscow to free her.

Savchenko was also accused of attempts on the life of cameraman Viktor Denisov and six Ukrainian citizens who came under artillery shelling. The prosecutor has asked to remove these accusations from the case, TASS reports.

Two Russian journalists, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, were killed in the shelling.
