A Kurdish representative in Russia told TASS on Thursday that Syrian Kurds proclaimed the creation of a "democratic system of Rojava and northern Syria", a federated district in Syria, at a conference held in the town of Rumeila (Syria’s Al-Hasakah province).

"The decision to establish the federation of northern Syria was adopted unanimously today. From now on, this region is a federative district in northern Syria," Farhat Patiyev, the head of the Council of the Federal National Cultural Autonomy of the Kurds, said.

The Syrian government and at least one major opposition bloc have dismissed the move, bringing together three Kurdish-led areas under one, PYD-controlled federal system.

The New York Times writes if Kurds move ahead with the plan, they will be dipping a toe into the roiling waters of debate over two proposals to redraw the Middle East, each with major implications for Syria and its neighbors.
