"The collapse of the Russian ruble against the US dollar continued for a second day on Thursday. The currency fell below 85 rubles, setting a new all-time low against the greenback", informs RT.
Wednesday's fall took the ruble below the Black Tuesday currency crash of 16 December 2014, when the exchange rate was 80 rubles against the dollar and 100 against the euro.
Oil, which is the mainstay of the economy of Russia, recently plummeted to under $30 a barrel, a 13-year low. The ruble is under pressure from western economic sanctions on Russian for its interference in the Ukraine crisis.
According to TASS, Kremlin believes that the current change of the ruble rate should not be regarded as "collapse". "The rate is changing indeed, the rate is volatile but it is a far cry from collapse", the spokesman of Russian president Dmitry Peskov said.
Official exchange rates on January 23 fell to 80,57/dollar and 87,23/euro.
