Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar on Sunday for his leading role in the film "The Revenant."

DiCaprio, 41, had been nominated four times previously for an Oscar over a career spanning 25 years. But he was favorite to finally take home the best actor Academy Award this year for his grueling portrayal of a fur trapper left for dead in an icy wilderness after being mauled by a bear, Reuters informs.

While accepting his Oscar, Leonardo DiCaprio obviously thanked everyone who worked on the movie, along with his friends and family who’ve been with him since the beginning:

"Really, truly, by so many fans and so many people in the industry. It's quite shocking actually, and what can you say? Except I'm very grateful, I really am. It feels amazing."

However, he used most of his time to bring awareness to an issue he’s really passionate about. “Climate change is real,” DiCaprio explained. “It’s the most urgent threat facing our species. We need to help around the world," he added.

Therewith, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu picked up best director for The Revenant, becoming the first person in 65 years to claim back-to-back directing awards, while Room's Brie Larson won best actress.
