Senior Director at the McCain Institute and former president of Freedom House David Kramer has called for more aggressive measures aimed at negating the influence of Russian media outlets like RT and Sputnik.
During an interview with the Lithuanian weekly news magazine Veidas, he proposed either tracking the assets of state-funded Russian media companies or simply banning them outright, not for the nature of their broadcasts but simply because they're sponsored by Russian government.
Sputnik's press service pointed out that the measures proposed by Kramer violate two core European principles: freedom of speech and of the freedom of the press. It went on to highlight that for a man who used to be the head of Freedom House to voice these ideas was especially bizarre, given that the organization was supposedly dedicated to the promotion of the principles of freedom and democracy in the world.
