Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry on the initiative of the US side on February 4. Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry discussed the current status of the Syrian peace settlement in great detail,Information and Press Department reports.

Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry expressed regret at the fact that the intra-Syrian dialogue, launched in Geneva several days ago under UN auspices, had been put on hold, and they agreed to take the necessary efforts in order to make this pause as short as possible.

It is said that the Russian side voiced concern over the unacceptable pre-conditions for launching a sustained negotiating process with the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, put forward by some representatives of the Syrian opposition, and also urged the United States and its allies to remain firmly committed to all the provisions contained in UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry noted the need for urgent moves on the part of the Syrian Government and the opposition to allow humanitarian relief aid to reach areas in Syria blocked by government forces and units of the armed opposition. In this context, Mr Lavrov and Mr Kerry agreed on possible coordinated efforts to airlift humanitarian relief aid to specific Syrian regions aboard military-transport planes.

They also confirmed an arrangement to hold a regular ministerial meeting of the International Syria Support Group on February 11 in Munich. There are plans to review all aspects of the Syrian peace settlement at that meeting, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
