Russia's athletics chief said on Monday four Russian track-and-field athletes have tested positive for meldonium.
"We have information that four people gave positive tests for meldonium. We will deal with this today," Dmitry Shlyakhtin, head of the Russian Athletics Federation, told Interfax.
Dmitry Shlyakhtin did not name the athletes and it was unclear if the Russian sprinter Nadezhda Kotlyarova, who revealed on Sunday that she had taken meldonium, was included in the list.
According to BBC, at least 16 Russian sportspeople, including tennis player Maria Sharapova, have tested positive for the substance since it was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency on 1 January.
Moreover, since Maria Sharapova admitted using meldonium, The Guardian informs,
at least 100 athletesfrom multiple countries have tested positive for the drug, which is used to treat diabetes and low magnesium and has been linked to increased sporting performance.
