Russia has registered on Monday its first case of a person infected with the Zika virus after a tourist contracted the disease in the Dominican Republic, Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said.
The woman infected returned to Moscow from a holiday in the Dominican Republic, and was admitted to hospital. According to The Moscow Times, the disease was not detected in the woman upon arrival at Domodedovo Airport, via Rospotrebnadzor, but a few days after her return she began feeling unwell and had a temperature and a rash. Currently, she is undergoing treatment in a Moscow hospital. Moreover, Skvortsova reported the unnamed woman's family were healthy and had not tested positive for Zika virus.
"The women will be discharged from the hospital in the nearest future,” said the chief infectious disease doctor of Moscow on Monday. The doctor also mentioned that “no lethal cases of the virus have been known - it’s not dangerous in everyday life, there is no epidemic in Russia.”
The Zika virus does not cause serious complications in adults, but it is suspected of leading to severe brain defects in newborns. It transmits by mosquitos and causes high temperature, pink eye, headaches and malaise, joint pains, sometimes nausea and stomach pains
