Russia called for a UN security council meeting on Friday, February 19, over fears of a possible Turkish ground operation in Syria. The meeting is to be called to discuss Ankara's plans for a ground operation in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
Moscow says Turkey's actions in the region are threatening Syrian sovereignty, adding it would table a resolution demanding its prevention. According to RT, Russia is concerned about the escalation of tensions on the Syrian-Turkish border, and "Turkey's announced plans to put boots on the ground in northern Syria," Zakharova stressed.
"Russia intends to convene a UN security council meeting today to discuss this issue and to introduce a draft resolution calling for a halt to any actions that would undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria," she added.
Meanwhile, Russian and US officials have held talks in Geneva ahead of a wider meeting on Friday aimed at trying to secure a cessation of hostilities in Syria.
