Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has told the RT TV channel on Tuesday that Yuri Gagarin’s feat symbolizes Russian people’s heroism

"For me and for billions of people all over the world Yuri Gagarin is cosmonaut number one. He glorified our motherland and embodied its achievements. Certainly, Gagarin's personality played a significant role in this nationwide inspiration derived from the man's first journey in space. I can vividly remember his smile, charisma, sincere friendliness, and openness," the minister said.

Moreover, yuri Gagarin’s daughter Yelena, who is currently Director General of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, told TASS the memories of her father evoke warm feelings in people regardless of what generation they belong to.

"The name Gagarin sounds like a code word, like a key to communications with foreign partners," she said. "It creates an incomparable festive atmosphere and boosts morale."

Since 2011, April 12 has been marked as International Day of Human Space Flight at the international level.
