RIA Novosti reported on Thursday a psychiatric evaluation of Varvara Karaulova (Alexandra Ivanova), a student of the Moscow State University who stands charged with attempting to join the Islamic State militants in Syria, has found her mentally fit.

Karaulova has undergone an examination to determine her mental state and has been recognized as sane, her lawyer Sergei Badamshin told.

"I can't disclose any details of the expert evaluation, but I can say that my client was found sane on the basis of its results," Badamshin said on April 7.

According to The Moscow Times, the court will be unable to send her to psychiatric institution rather than jail, if convicted.

The 19-year-old student of MSU was first detained at the Turkish-Syrian border along with 13 other Russian citizens on June 4, 2015.  Later that year, she returned to Russia under escort of Interpol employees. In October, Karaulova, who had changed her name to Alexandra Ivanova, was again arrested in Moscow and put in jail.
